2018 Oscar Predictions: VISUAL EFFECTS and MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING (November)

The top three in Visual Effects remain the same from last month: Blade Runner 2049, War for the Planet of the Apes and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Dunkirk falls to 5th and The Shape of Water makes its top 5 debut this month, moving up two spots to #4. Elsewhere it’s just small moves up for Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, Okja and mother! and equally small moves down for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Academy’s official VFX bakeoff list won’t land until late December.

We take our first stab at the always difficult to predict Makeup and Hairstyling category with Darkest Hour the clear frontrunner here. This group loves its old people makeup and fat suits and Darkest Hour has them both for Gary Oldman’s transformation into Winston Churchill. The Shape of Water has strong support but have some of us wondering if the fishman’s look will fall more into costume and/or visual effects. Then we have I, Tonya with its plethora of 80s and 90s wigs, a fat suit for Margot Robbie and impressive old age makeup for Allison Janney. The team behind I, Tonya is also the Oscar-winning team behind Dallas Buyers Club. Last year the Academy’s official Makeup and Hairstyling finalists were revealed on December 21st.

These are the official 2018 Oscar Predictions in Visual Effects and Makeup & Hairstyling for November from the Gold Rush Gang. Keep an eye on all of the Gold Rush Gang’s 2018 Oscar predictions updated LIVE throughout the month.

About Erik Anderson

Erik blames his mother for his love of all things Oscar, having watched them together since he opened his eyes. They also watched Miss Universe religiously every year (the pageantry!) and Erik came to the conclusion that the combination of these two things ultimately led him down the path to obsessing about awards and ACTRESSING. He began at GoldDerby, led by Tom O’Neill and then migrated over to Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), headed up by Sasha Stone before breaking off to create AwardsWatch. He is a member of the International Cinephile Society, GALECA (The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics), the International Press Academy and is the founder/owner of AwardsWatch.
