2018 BAFTA Nominations: ‘Shape of Water’ Leads with 12; ‘Get Out,’ ‘Lady Bird’ Shut Out of Top Awards

The nominations for the 2018 EE BAFTA awards were announced and The Shape of Water leads all film with 12 nominations, including Best Film, Director, Actress and Original Screenplay. Two films share the second highest nomination total, nine – Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk grabbed eight nominations apiece.

There were two glaring omissions in the Best Film category: Get Out and Lady Bird, the latter of which just won the Golden Globe for Motion Picture – Comedy at the Golden Globes. Both films were nominated by the Producers Guild of America last week. And just like at the Globes, Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig were also snubbed in Best Director, making for yet another all-male and all-white lineup. Gerwig’s Lady Bird managed acting nominations for Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, Peele’s Get Out earned a Best Actor nomination for Daniel Kaluuya and both films were also nominated for Original Screenplay. Last year, Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was snubbed in Best Director, continuing a BAFTA tradition of ignoring black talent. Only two of the 20 nominated performances are for non-white actors: Kaluuya and Octavia Spencer in The Shape of Water. The last woman to be nominated for Best Director was Kathryn Bigelow for 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty.

Other surprises included three major nominations for Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool: Best Actress for Annette Bening, Best Actor for Jamie Bell and Adapted Screenplay and a very surprising snub for BAFTA legend Judi Dench in Victoria and Abdul. The home advantage strength earned Kristin Scott Thomas a Supporting Actress nomination for Darkest Hour.

Over 6500 BAFTA members will vote on these awards and the winners will be revealed at the February 18 ceremony with a new host, Joanna Lumley.

About Erik Anderson

Erik thanks his mother for his love of all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards together since he was in the single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself at GoldDerby, led by Tom O’Neill and then migrated over to Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), headed up by Sasha Stone before breaking off to create AwardsWatch. He is a member of the International Cinephile Society, GALECA (The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics), the International Press Academy and is the founder/owner of AwardsWatch.
