Taron Egerton to play Elton John in biopic ‘Rocketman’ for Paramount

Taron Egerton is set to star as Oscar, Grammy and Tony-winning superstar and music legend Elton John in Rocketman for Paramount Pictures.

Dexter Fletcher, who replaced Bryan Singer on the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody due this November, will direct.

The will be written by Lee Hall and follow John from the Royal Academy of Music to his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin to superstardom. To date, John has earned an Oscar (for The Lion King), a Tony (for Aida) and five Grammys. He’s sold over 300 million records during his 50+ year career.

Egerton and John co-starred in the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, for director Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn is on board as a producer for Rocketman with his company Marv Films. Fletcher also previously directed Egerton in Eddie the Eagle.

Production is set to begin this summer.

About Erik Anderson

Erik thanks his mother for his love of all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards together since he was in the single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself at GoldDerby, led by Tom O’Neill and then migrated over to Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), headed up by Sasha Stone before breaking off to create AwardsWatch. He is a member of the International Cinephile Society, GALECA (The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics), the International Press Academy and is the founder/owner of AwardsWatch.
