I wouldn't compare anything that John Wells did on television to what Leder achieved on the Leftovers. Damon Lindelof basically credits the shows success himself as being largely due to her influence.

That being said, I totally get what you're saying, and this sounds just about generic enough that it could prove to be another flop transition to film for her.

John Wells was the show-runner for ER during its most successful run. It was considered a monumental series, critically, awards-wise, and with TV audiences. He won an Emmy for the second season of ER (with Mimi Leder, lol), as well as the first four seasons of The West Wing. I would suggest is contributions on television were bigger?

Sure but I still think there is a huge difference between being a great showrunner and a capable director. Despite his major success, he was only ever once nominated for directing, getting most of his praise for the writing.. and the west wing was clearly sorkins show and got derailed as soon as Wells took over.

Michelle Mclaren has never ran her own show but I would still be very interested in seeing her actually get the chance to direct her own film.

    How baity is Blanchett?

And 20 people believe Emily Blunt can actually happen? At best, she'll end up in another Into the Woods situation.

Blanchett will have to overcome a shaky distributor that can also send Adams Lead, and a potentially crowded Comedy Globe field. She's royalty and the Oct move is promising, though

How much of the creative energy of a traditional TV series comes from a television director (unless, it's, say, something like Twin Peaks? or a one-off series). I thought the show-runner is the most powerful/important position on a TV show.

It's ironic how competitive is this year's Comedy Globe field in both acting categories.

Meryl's role in 'Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again' seems very small.

The Wife is considered comedy? And Meryl is basically a cameo in Mamma Mia 2. She'll get a nod for MPR.

BTW, if this year's BAFTA and GG is an indication, she's probably preparing for the campaign next year Or at least hoping for a Latina actress finally winning here

ETA: The Wife. Going for the reviews, they mentioned the film as also funny and touching. Akin to dramedy. It could go anyway.

Whilst Melissa McCarthy is primarily known for starting in comedies my impression is that ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ Is meant to be a serious drama.
