Deadwood (Without Spoilers)

This is excellent so far. Really impressive how expansive the world of Deadwood has become in five episodes, and how well captured so many of the characters already are. (I want a show where Jane and Doc Cochran hang out.) And the use of language is unlike anything I've seen in film or television.

(Question, though - [SPOILER]did the jury declare McCall innocent because they knew it was best for Deadwood? The judge tells them that they're honor-bound to acquit him if they believe he was avenging his brother, but it doesn't seem likely that anyone would buy that.[/SPOILER])

Yes! I have watched a lot of TV shows recently, but nothing even comes to close the way that language and dialogue is used in this show. I think it really made the show what it is. So much of this series is about the tension's arising between all of these various characters and their interests and language played such a huge part is sustaining this. Absolutely brilliant. Swearengen's monologue's alone make this show worth watching.

So, uh. The last five minutes of Boy-The-Earth-Talks-To is some of the best television I've ever seen. Holy shit!

The payoff of all of the season's plots culminating in Wu cutting off his braid, Merrick screaming that elections are coming, and the town celebrating the marriage was absolutely incredible. And it's such an uplifting episode of television, too, in a weird way. After all the trials of the season, everything gets swept up by the celebration as the camp is symbolically joined together. It's truly extraordinary.

So I finished this a couple of days ago. I did find the ending a bit frustrating since it sort of ends with a pause and that's inherently unsatisfying, but thematically it works perfectly well and I have to be happy that we got three seasons of this wonderful show. I think I'll miss Farnum most of all. And Paul Scheer's reasons for choosing Buffy over this in the Vulture tournament were bullshit!

Anyway. On to The Wire!

Also, maybe it's just me, but would anyone else snap up a complete published volume of the scripts?

For those who have yet to pick up the complete series on BD, both Amazon.com and Best Buy are selling it for $59.99. I picked it up myself last night, using some Reward Zone coupons to get it for a bargain of $40 (pretty much the best bang for my buck I've ever gotten). It's hard to imagine the price ever dipping any lower, so anybody who has been on the fence would be wise to dive in now.
