Voting - AD's 50 Top Movie Musicals of All Time

So after due consideration I've decided to do what I want and I will run AD's 50 favorite movie musicals. So heres how it'll work,

Send me your top 25 musicals in orders. Number 1 on your list equals 25 points, being number 25 equal 1 points.

    What qualifies, to quote wikipedia

'The musical film is a film genre in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing. The songs usually advance the plot or develop the film's characters, though in some cases they serve merely as breaks in the storyline, often as elaborate "production numbers".'

So please send me a PM and hope this will work well.

Voting will close on 25th April 2012.

    PUT FYCs BELOW.

    Good list here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._films_by_year

    Isn't 50 excessive?

Don't get me wrong. I've seen WELL over 50 musicals, and I know I won't be the only one in AD who can come up with 50 favorites ranked. But do you think that many of us have seen 50 great musicals? Will you be accepting lists with less than 50?

(I was bitching in Paddy M's thread that he ONLY accepts lists of 10 performances and now I'm bitching that you're asking for too many musicals. )

    I'd prefer 25 as well.

25 would be a lot more manageable.

25 seems much more logical to me.

    I won't vote.
Musicals are a huge blindspot for me, as I've only seen a few (If we're not including animated disney musicals, I'm not sure that I could even come up with 5).
    Recently watched films:
    A History of Violence - ***1/2
    The Flat - **
    Upstream Color - ***1/2
    Man of Steel - **1/2
    The Ascent - *****

    FYI

Films that didn't make it into my top 25, but would love to see in the top 50:

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Meet Me in St. Louis, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, The Music Man, All That Jazz and Fantasia should each make the list.

Speaking of Fantasia, it would be a bad list if it didn't include animation. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Lady and the Tramp, and The Little Mermaid are all top notch films that could justifiably be on this sort of list.

It's not hip to admit to liking The Sound of Music, however it too should be included.

My other 14 musicals I would include:

    The Unsinkable Molly Brown
    Singin' in the Rain
    The Wizard of Oz
    The Bandwagon
    Top Hat
    My Fair Lady
    Mary Poppins
    South Park
    Yankee Doodle Dandee
    West Side Story
    Cabaret
    Grease
    The King and I
    42nd Street

Will this FYC be removed? ... I know it doesn't have pictures...

If this was simply Top 50 Stage Musicals of all time, or Stage and screen, it would no problem to find 50 great choices.

Make it 50, you pussies. If you haven't seen 50, you shouldn't be selecting 25!

Also, don't you dare think only Americans made great musicals:

    FYC:

    The Threepenny Opera (Pabst, 1931)

By the Bluest of Seas (Barnet, 1936)

    Le million (Clair, 1931)

My biggest problem with 50 is not that I haven't seen enough--I've seen nearly all that have been made, including non-English language musicals that have been available in the U.S. The issue is that I would have trouble finding 50 to rank; I prefer not to rank films that I find marginal in a "best of" list. Though I will have no difficulty accommodating to whatever the decision is.

It isn't hip to admit liking musicals period. But that isn't going to stop us.

And I think 25 is an ideal number. I may be underestimating AD, but I think you'll get more lists (with truly great musicals) if it's 25.

I left Fantasia out AND Red Shoes as classical music just didn't seem to fit in. Where do you draw the line between Fantasia and Amadeus being both musicals? I thought it best not to include them, but that's just me.
