Yeah, go ahead and name 'em.
I'll start with the obvious:

Oh, ok, I'm on board with this.![]()
As long as it doesn't consist of 300 posts that look like...
1) Sandra Bullock
2) Reese Witherspoon
3) Hilary Swank
4) Halle Berry
5) Kate Winslet
6) Julia Roberts
7) Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady)
8) Helen Hunt
9) Nicole Kidman
10) Kathy Bates
I mean...this could get old![]()
I could have easily had any of these three (or all) on my list. There are more than a few factors that go into this; personal feelings about an actor, the role, the performance but more probably the most important should be who they were up against.
In that regard, I should probably pull out someone from my list to replace with Kathy Bates (since Huston should have won) and Julia Roberts (since Burstyn should have won, even though I think Roberts is really good here).
Eh, Leigh didn't deserve either of her Oscars. I'm not saying that she's one of the 10 worst winners or anything, but I just don't get what people see in those performances.
She's like a British Kathy Bates.
Not seen : the two Jody Foster, the second Jane Fonda, the first Sally Field and Spaceck
Marie Dressler
Katharine Hepburn (1933)
Bette Davis (1935)
Judy Holliday
Audrey Hepburn
Jane Fonda (1971)
Luise Fletcher
Julia Roberts
Reese Witherspoon
Marion Cotillard
Of the winners I've seen, I would go so far as to say that Vivien Leigh's Oscar for Streetcar is the most richly deserved in the category. Gone with the Wind is right up there, and she was worthy of a third win for Waterloo Bridge.
As for awfulness, here are a baker's dozen of bad wins...
13. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
12. Kate Winslet, The Reader
11. Jane Fonda, Coming Home
10. Katharine Hepburn, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
9. Shirley Booth, Come Back, Little Sheba
8. Joan Fontaine, Suspicion (A shame, because had she won for Rebecca or Letter from an Unknown Woman, she'd be among the most deserving winners).
7. Glenda Jackson, A Touch of Class
6. Kathy Bates, Misery
5. Helen Hunt, As Good as It Gets
4. Olivia de Havilland, To Each His Own
3. Katharine Hepburn, On Golden Pond
2. Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Joan Fontaine / Suspicion
Audrey Hepburn / Roman Holiday
Katherin Hepburn / Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Geraldine Page / The Trip to Bountiful
Marlee Matlin / Children of a Lesser God
Jodie Foster / The Accused
Jessica Tandy / Driving Miss Daisy
Jodie Foster / The Silence of the Lambs
Halle Berry / Monster's Ball
Nicole Kidman / The Hours
Granted, there is a LOT that I have not seen![]()
In no particular order:
Ginger Rogers
Loretta Young
Sandra Bullock
Grace Kelly
Reese Witherspoon
Greer Garson
Susan Hayward
Marlee Matlin
Sally Field (Places in the Heart)
Luise Rainer (Good Hearth)
Edit: Oh, I forgot about Jane Fonda in Coming Home. Yeah, that one too.
