Margot Robbie sits atop the Best Supporting Actress predictions this month with her Quentin Tarantino debut Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, playing famed and ill-fated actress Sharon Tate. With the film having its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next week, we’ll have actual word on the film and her performance but for now she makes sense as a frontrunner.
I have good word on Laura Dern in Noah Baumbach’s next film and with a supporting role in Greta Gerwig’s remake of Little Women, Dern will be a fixture this fall and winter.
Scarlett Johansson, hot off the huge finale of the Avengers films, is also in the Baumbach (as the lead) but could find herself a spot here – in Taika Waititi’s “anti-hate satire” Jojo Rabbit, which just landed the most prime awards date from Fox Searchlight, October 18th.
Annette Bening in The Report could be a contender but the film’s September release gives me pause.
Don’t count out two-time Oscar winner Maggie Smith to show up for the feature film version of Downton Abbey, which won Smith a three Emmys, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for playing Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
Looking further, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie could give Scarlett Johansson some chase in Jojo Rabbit; Oscar winner Brie Larson (also hot off the Avengers) might return to fold with Just Mercy; Janelle Monaé was probably pretty close to a nomination for 2016’s Hidden Figures and is now poised for a spot in Harriet. I can see a path for Zhao Shuzhen in The Farewell, playing that film’s matriarch and I won’t even pretend that 21-time nominee Meryl Streep isn’t always in contention for nearly anything she has coming. This year it’s The Laundromat. But is she lead or supporting?
