The inaugural Gotham TV Awards were held live and in person today at Cipriani 25 in New York City where the series winners were Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Paramount+’s Colin from Accounts and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Prime Video series from Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover based on the 2005 feature film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, was named Breakthrough Drama Series. Glover stars with Maya Erskine as the titular Smiths, two spies in an arranged marriage that end up becoming each other’s targets. The series has been renewed for a second season but, despite rumors, it is unknown if Glover and/or Erskine will return or if the show will explore a new couple. Zine Tseng was the Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series winner for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem.
The Paramount+ series Colin from Accounts was a double winner, taking the awards for Breakthrough Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series for co-creator and co-star Harriet Dyer. The series explores the lives of two people who’s lives are brought together by a car accident.
In the limited series categories, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer triumphed as the Breakthrough Limited Series winner. The series, starring Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning, details the true story of stand up comedian Gadd and a stalker fan. Andrew Scott was the Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series winner for Netflix’s Ripley. Scott plays the titular role in the adaptation of the classic Patricia Highsmith novel about a man who interlopes his way into the world of the wealthy with deadly results.
Mariska Hargitay, Peter Morgan and Lulu Wang received the group’s inaugural spotlight awards. Hargitay, who has played Captain Olivia Benson on more than 550 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, received the Anniversary Tribute for her work. In addition to honoring Hargitay’s career, the Gotham TV Awards celebrated the 25th anniversary of the venerable NBC drama series. Morgan received the Creator Tribute for The Crown, which was also honored for its sixth and final season on Netflix. Expats creator Wang was honored with the Spotlight Tribute for her work adapting Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel into the Prime Video series.
“In launching the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, we’re proud to carry on a longstanding Gotham Awards tradition in honoring iconic artists and creators who have enriched the landscape and pushed the boundaries of TV, making an indelible impact on the medium” said Jeffrey Sharp, The Gotham executive director. “Lulu Wang and Peter Morgan have crafted profound and ambitious shows that capture the artistic breadth of television, while Mariska Hargitay has delivered one of the most iconic performances in the history of TV.”
The Breakthrough Comedy, Drama, Limited and Nonfiction Series Awards were selected to honor exceptionally realized new fiction and nonfiction series that expand the possibilities of creativity in serialized content with Outstanding Performance Awards honoring outstanding performances in the three Breakthrough fiction series categories (Comedy, Drama and Limited Series). Nominees were selected by committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making television determined the final Gotham TV Award recipients.
