2024 Primetime Emmy Award Winners: ‘Shōgun’ Makes Emmys History while ‘Hacks’ Gets The Last Laugh in Comedy

The Primetime Emmy Awards are tonight, back to their normal slot in September (after a strange year television-wise after last year’s strikes) to honor the last year in television. Emmy winners Dan and Eugene Levy were tapped to host this year’s ceremony at the Peacock Theater, both bringing hilarious one-liners and a clear love for television. The two brought attention to the incredible year of television while also borderline-begging nominees and potential winners to keep their speeches short as possible.

The ceremony paid tribute to different television hallmarks across eras, including television moms and dads like Connie Britton and George Lopez, television doctors that saw Mindy Kaling representing (but no actors from Grey’s Anatomy), police officers like Niecy Nash-Betts. The segments provided a nostalgic look at the history of television while presenting the awards, culminating in a The West Wing reunion to present Outstanding Drama Series.

Shōgun had 14 wins going into the ceremony, already a record-breaking amount of wins (previously held by John Adams). After winning four more tonight, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress, and Outstanding Drama Series, the show pushed its total wins to 18 and cementing a new record for wins in a single year. Anna Sawai delivered an emotional speech after winning her Emmy for Lead Actress that only further saw the push from artists for more diverse and original storytelling. Slow Horses was able to snag an Emmy tonight in the Writing category, perhaps solidifying the show’s inevitable Emmy return for season four. Elizabeth Debicki took home the award for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, The Crown‘s only primetime win for its final season.

It was a stiff competition going into the ceremony this year between The Bear and Hacks, but Hacks won the Comedy Series category after taking home Outstanding Lead Actress for Jean Smart and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy. The Bear won Outstanding Lead Actor for Jeremy Allen White, Supporting Actor for Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Actress for Liza Colón-Zayas, and Writing. It was a tight race that saw showrunner (of Hacks) championing comedy in her speech. Other series that found themselves in the running this year were Only Murders in the Building, Reservation Dogs, and What We Do in the Shadows. The two aforementioned winners took home the entirety of the comedy awards between just the two of them.

Baby Reindeer took home four Emmys tonight for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Jessica Gunning, Outstanding Lead Actor for Richard Gadd, and Outstanding Limited Series. The series had already won Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series going into the ceremony but had a stronger showing than anticipated. Gunning gave a speech filled with heart and humor that saw her threatening to sing before laughingly telling the audience she was kidding. Ripley took home a win for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series.
