50th Annie Awards: ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,’ ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ take top wins

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was named Best Feature at the 50th Annie Awards on Saturday night, also taking home wins for direction, character animation, music and production design. The film led the nominations with nine. The film has swept every animation precursor: the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, BAFTA, and the PGA and Annie tonight.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On triumphed in Writing and Voice Acting – Feature, both for Jenny Slate, and Best Indie Feature.

Oscar-nominated animated shorts The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse and The Ice Merchants both won awards tonight, in separate categories from each other. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse found wins in Special Production, Direction – TV Media, Character Animation and Editorial while The Ice Merchants won Short Subject. The multi-Emmy winning Netflix series Love Death + Robots and Oni: Thunder God’s Tale also earned multiple awards.

Avatar: The Way of Water won both of the live action categories it was nominated in: FX – Feature and Character Animation – Live Action.

Writer-director and Pixar CEO Pete Docter, prolific TV series creator Craig McCracken and the late Evelyn Lambart, known for her short films, each received the Winsor McCay Award for lifetime or career achievement. Author, historian and educator Mindy Johnson was given the June Foray Award for significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the animation industry. The Ub Iwerks Award for technical achievement went to Visual Effects Reference Platform, initially developed by Nick Cannon and Francois Chardavoine to eliminate incompatibilities between digital content creation software. The Certificate of Merit Award for service to the art and industry was presented to voice actor John Omohundro.
