65th GRAMMY nominations: Adele and Beyoncé to battle it out once again for Album of the Year

Published by

Nominations for the 65th annual GRAMMY Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with Beyoncé leading the field with nine nods, pushing her total nods to 88 to become the most-nominated artist in GRAMMY history, tying her husband Jay-Z (who had held the record with 83 nods, got five more this year, for work on “Renaissance” and DJ Khaled’s “God Did.”). Kendrick Lamar close behind with eight, and Adele and Brandi Carlile tied with seven. Four artists came in with six nominations apiece: Future, Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige, DJ Khaled and Randy Merrill.

That means we could have another duel between Beyoncé and Adele, as we did with their last albums, when Adele won Album of the Year for 25 over Beyoncé’s landmark record Lemonade. In her acceptance speech, Adele eschewed praise upon praise for Beyoncé and another eventual matchup seemed inevitable. Beyoncé’s nine new nominations come from the album Renaissance, which received nods for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Album of the Year. Meanwhile, lead single “Break My Soul” got love in Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year categories, and she also received nominations for Best R&B Performance  (“Virgo’s Groove”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Plastic Off the Sofa”), Best R&B Song (“Cuff It”), as well as Best Song Written for Visual Media, for “Be Alive” from the film King Richard, for which she received her first Oscar nomination earlier this year. Despite 28 wins, more than any other female artist, she has yet to secure the group’s top prize, Album of the Year in her four previous nominations there.

Adele has an astonishing record of 15 wins from 18 nominations (before today), including two for Album of the Year; 2012’s 21 and 2017’s 25. She will attempt to threepeat this year with 30, to tie Taylor Swift for most Album of the Year wins by a female artist.

They’ll go up against ABBA, Mary J. Blige, Bad Bunny, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles and Lizzo.

Viola Davis earned her th GRAMMY nomination today, the last award the Emmy, Oscar and Tony-winning star needs to secure her EGOT. She earned it for the audio book component of her best-selling memoir, Finding Me. Her competition will be very formidable. She’ll go up against GRAMMY and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, EGOT winner Mel Brooks, GRAMMY and Oscar winner Questlove.

New categories in their inaugural year included Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance, Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media, Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.

This year also featured the inclusion of the Special Merit Award in the form of Best Song For Social Change. This awards was determined by a Blue Ribbon Committee and ratified by the Recording Academy Board of Trustees. Submissions must contain lyrical content that addresses a timely social issue and promotes understanding, peace-building and empathy.

The one-hour nomination announcement featured performances by Grammy winners Dan + Shay and Cyndi Lauper with category announcements by 12-time GRAMMY winner and Recording Academy National Trustee John Legend; multiplatinum-selling recording artist Machine Gun Kelly; three-time GRAMMY winner Olivia Rodrigo; past GRAMMY nominee and five-time Latin GRAMMY winner Luis Fonsi; and past GRAMMY nominee Jimmie Allen.

Nominees and winners are determined solely by Voting Members of the Recording Academy and recordings have to be submitted during the Online Entry period to be eligible for GRAMMY consideration. The eligibility period for the 65th GRAMMY Awards is October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022. This year, 16,741 eligible entries were submitted for consideration, down from nearly 22,000 last year.

Voting on the nominations will take place December 14 through January 4. The 65th GRAMMY Awards will air live on CBS from on February 5, 2023 from L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena. See nominations below and go to grammy.com for the full list.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
