Thread: Best Screenplay: November

  1. #121
I retract what I previously said about Vice almost certainly not missing here. The latest round of reactions to it were terrible and I can definitely see it missing. However, I also can't really see Green Book making it after all of the controversy it has had, so I'm at a loss for what to do for the last slot. I would have said Isle of Dogs could take it, but if it can't even win critics awards for animated feature, it isn't going to get nominated in screenplay. If A Quiet Place starts to make a play for a Best Picture nomination, then I think it can take the final slot.

What do you think get in instead of it? The controversy with Green Book, Vice flopping critically, and Isle of Dogs being unable to win Best Animated Feature at the NYFCC has taken out 3 of my top 7 in the category and I'm not really sure what to go with after that.

My reactions to the early reports that it was great certainly were, but if Vice does end up getting a Metacritic score in the 60s or lower, which seems likely, it definitely isn't a lock here and is probably missing Picture. It might not miss here just because the category is so weak, but it is a serious possibility.

you do tend to overreact to every bit of news though and sometimes you let your biases get in the way when you're predicting but hey nobody's perfect

There's no way Vice goes lower than 70 on MC. But I agree on that it does not look like a strong Screenplay frontrunner anymore. The Favourite can easily win here now with First Reformed being the distant alt (unless FR somehow sneaks in BP) if Vice doesn't get surprisingly strong reviews after these reactions.

With original Screenplay having so many divisive contenders (Vice, Green Book, The Favourite), Schrader could very well just end up winning the whole damn thing.
I'm not even sure First Reformed will be nominated here. don't overreact.

I still think The Favourite will win.

But if A24 really steps it up and reminds everyone that the writer of mother-freakin' TAXI DRIVER has never won an Oscar (or been nominated!), then maybe he could have a chance. I wish he had the industry rallying behind him like they did with James Ivory last year. Though I guess Ivory had a weak category with no real competition.

What, because Hereditary will be nominated before it? Or are you part of the Eighth Grade fanclub who thinks the Academy cannot wait to vote for it? They are just dying to vote for it.

Or, no...wait. It's A Quiet Place, isn't it? The genre box office hit is going to get the upper hand.

It's end of November. With everything that has transpired and all the awards that are still coming, you need to start REACTING. To what's happening in this race.

Wtf is this “First Reformed can win” thing? If Vice is meh (seems likely now), then it’s clearly Favourite vs. Roma. Neither of these are divisive and they’re both gonna get a bunch of noms. FR can get like two.

If Vice does get in, it'll be like a placeholder.
