True. We'll see how it goes. I'll predict it for now. But maybe I should have it below 'Ready Player One'.

I wasn't too high on 'Ready Player One' because it felt like it was a big financial disappointment in the United States.

It wasn't a huge hit in the US but it wasn't a flop either. And I don't think its financial status will matter to the VFX branch. Those guys don't seem to care about grosses all that much - plenty of financial disappointments have been nominated and have even won. Look no further than the most recent winner "Blade Runner 2049".

Since I'm predicting Mary Poppins Returns getting a Best Picture nomination now, it winning here makes sense.

    1. Mary Poppins Returns
    2. Black Panther
    3. First Man
    4. Ready Player One
    5. Avengers: Infinity War

    6. Aquaman
    7. Bumblebee
    8. Annihilation
    9. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    10. Solo: A Star Wars Story

I don't see any way that Mary Poppins Returns wins this category. Integrating 2D cartoons with live-action performers is something that Hollywood artists mastered literally decades ago. The wow factor simply won't be there. Obviously, there will be loads of CGI in there, but it won't be enough to get close to a win.

I think the race is between First Man and Black Panther. Both will likely be BP nominees (First Man is falling fast, but I still think it'll squeeze in) and Marvel has already gathered tons of nominations in this category. One of their movies will win eventually, so why not the one that's also their first BP nominee? First Man will stand out in the crowd for not being a superhero movie or the pop culture overload that is Ready Player One, so it stands a good chance at playing spoiler. I really think it's as simple as that.

It's certainly possible, but it's rare for a movie to win here with only a single nod. The Jungle Book did it, of course, against a rag-tag group that included no BP nominees, but before that, you have to go all the way back to Death Becomes Her.

Or perhaps Ready Player One scores both Sound nods and that's that.

I think Black Panther will probably win in the end because it'll be a BP nominee with tons of CGI, but at the same time, it doesn't really have any signature standout effects the way that Ready Player One does. I think the Rachel reveal really sealed the deal for Blade Runner last year, much more than just the CGI cityscapes, so having a memorable effects sequence can really separate you from the pack when it comes to a tight race like this.

if nominated, First Man will win by default. if it isn't nominated, it's anyone's game. sad year for effects IMO
