according to Gold Derby the list of 10 is decided by an executive committee. Not sure who decided on the first 20 though...

The executive committee will determine the 10 semi-finalists that will be announced on Dec. 17 (along with contenders in other craft categories). At that point, all members of the branch will be invited to a screening of excerpts from these 10 films at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Their ballots will be counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees that will be revealed on Jan. 22.

So Paddington 2 just got nominated for the Annie Award for “Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Live Action Production”. It’s the same award that Kong: Skull Island got nominated for last year. Looks like one to watch out for

Replace Jurassic World with Bumblebee and this would be my predicted shortlist.

Mortal Engines is a mediocre fest but it deserves a nomination here. The CGI/practical mix was typical outstanding work from WETA. None of the Marvel films deserve a nom this year. If Black Panther gets a nom, it'll be for the film itself than the actual VFX work.

Haha, I was so convinced that Aquaman was going to get the nod and it didn't even make the shortlist! At least I was right about Isle of Dogs not making the shortlist, though. Some right, some wrong. I was really wrong about Aquaman, though.

    So, now, I guess...

Yeah, this will be our Top 5. The win is between Black Panther and First Man.

I still don't understand the confidence in First Man. This is the branch that snubbed Arrival, Dunkirk and The Shape of Water (all of these movies had VFX precursor noms everywhere). They won't nominate a BP contender with limited amount of VFX after the Ex Machina win.

Ant-Man & Wasp could get nominated actually. The quantum realm stuff and everything involving Ghost looked great.

I think it's absolutely contending, which makes things really tricky here. Because they can't nominate three Marvel films, right?

......which is my queue to again suggest the Black Panther snub here

I cannot believe Aquaman didn't make it.
