    Best Film Editing: January I

Film Editing is an important nomination to receive for any Best Picture candidate. Since 1980, every Best Picture winner has received a nomination for Best Film Editing. There were only two exceptions: 1980’s Ordinary People and 2014’s Birdman. A Star is Born has jumped 11% and maintains its number one spot in Film Editing. First Man fell 2% to third place while Roma increased its placing by 10% in our second place position. Users have lost a little faith in Vice as it drops by 2% to fourth place while The Favourite gains 9% more support but remains in fifth spot. Things become sketchier at the possibility of surprises. Not much agreement what the possibilities are among voters with Black Panther (41%) and BlacKkKlansman (33%) hanging out in the wings. What do you think will make the cut?

    DECEMBER RESULTS:

    01. A Star is Born (96%)

02. Roma (87%)

    03. First Man (79%)

04. Vice (58%)

    05. The Favourite (57%)

    06. Black Panther (41%)

A comparison to last year’s results at the same time:

01. The Shape of Water (94%)

02. Dunkirk (90%)

03. Get Out (73%)

    04. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (62%)
    05. Baby Driver (56%)

I, Tonya (15%) replaced Get Out in the final Oscar ballot.

PLEASE NOTE: There will not be another Film Editing poll this month until the Oscar nominations are released. You may wish to wait until after the ACE-Eddie nominees are announced on January 6 to place your vote. But please continue discussing.

I have no idea what’s gonna win this. Roma doesn’t feel right, First Man has fallen off a cliff and this is arguably the most criticized aspect of ASIB. I kinda wonder if BlacKkKlansman could emerge as the frontrunner?

Probably Black Panther. But I won’t count Vice out if it wins ACE and gets BP nominated

Critics don’t vote and perception of Editing with the industry varies drastically from critics groups, but all of Black Panther, KkKlansman, Vice and ASiB have barely been mentioned by groups thus far. In fact, none of them are in even the Top 6 of Metacritic’s chart atm. This would have been a lot easier if First Man didn’t flop.

Despite the great amount of passion there is for Roma, I’ll be surprised if it gets nominated for editing. It is a film largely comprised of deliberately paced long shots. There isn’t an action setpiece/hidden cut element to it like there was with Children of Men.

    BlacKkKlansman
    Black Panther
    The Favourite
    First Man
    A Star Is Born

    Alt. Mission: Impossible- Fallout

lol Vice is not winning. It could very easily not be nominated entirely. This will go to Klansman or Panther. Maybe even First Man.

Roma will still probably get nominated just because it’s a weak year and it’s a big contender. It’s doing well with precursors.

2014 feels a bit tougher so Birdman’s snub feels really flukey

Eh, the Editing has gotten enough love thus far and First Man + Widows flopping really opened this category up. I think it’s fine for the nom.

Critics groups aren’t industry voters, and the critics have showered Roma with awards. Industry voters aren’t likely to be as warm.

First Man is an editor’s film all around. Yes, it is a weak year but it’s still going to show up in 4-5 tech categories, including here.

I’m still predicting First Man here, but its commercial floppiness has made it vulnerable. More so than Roma imo.

Roma is showy enough with its scope to get in, I think. I would put Vice as 5th but eh idk. Wolf of Wall Street missed here.
