Oh I didn't realise they have shortlist for VFX. Thanks! I think I'll switch to MPR.

Black Panther winning this over Infinity War at the CC just proves those voters have no idea what they are doing. Idiots.

    FINAL PREDICTION (in alphabetical order)

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Black Panther
    First Man
    Ready Player One
    Welcome to Marwen

Mary Poppins Returns or Solo could sneak in (that Star Wars record is hard to ignore), but I'm feeling fairly confident.

There's no way both Mary Poppins Returns and Black Panther get in. Films with 0 VES nominations are almost never nominated, and we've never had a year in which there are 2 nominees with no VES nominations.

Also, First Man was nominated by the VES.

At the end of the day Marwen ended up being too big a flop to make it here. This branch is adverse to toxic money-losers, and even the low-grossing nominees that make it at least make their budgets back.

Yeah, First Man is the most likely. Four total nominations trumps every other nominee's one.

I'd feel better about that prediction if it hadn't underperformed, though. Zero above-the-line nods and an Editing snub to go along with it. It's somewhat in the same realm as winners like Interstellar and Blade Runner 2049 (only below-the-line, but more total nods than fellow Visual Effects nominees), except those both had five nods and were considered overperformers, plus they were both very effects-heavy. First Man has a couple space sequences and that's it. A ton of the movie takes place on Earth, where it's just another period piece/biopic.

In that sense, Infinity War could swoop in to take Marvel Studios' first win in the category. It's a CGI feast and Thanos is a standout digital character.

    Still, probably First Man.
