I don’t understand these sorts of dismissive comments towards Dern. She’s pretty big right now. Two consecutive Emmy noms (one of which she won), huge amount of press and visibility by being one of the major players in the biggest event show in ages, a second Oscar nom and tons of noteworthy film work in the last five years. It feels like she’s in the midst of a pretty impressive career resurgence and she’s fit the profile of recent winners here to a tee. This category has basically become the place to reward hard working vets/character actresses. I don’t think there would be any hesitation to go for Dern if the stars aligned.

She won’t win or even be nominated for LW, but that’s a probably a BP contender that would help her visibility.

I mean Laura Dern can't win cause Glenn Close didn't, but at the same ceremony, Regina King won Best Supporting Actress? And the years before Allison Janney and Viola Davis in the same category? If so, Laura Dern has more in common with the recent supporting actresses winners than Close.
