Frontrunner Friday: The show’s a mess, Oscar predictions are a roll of the dice

In the last Frontrunner Friday before final 2019 Oscar winner predictions come out next week, we have one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle – BAFTA. But did it help or just confuse us more? Let’s just say it’s a little from column A, a little from column B.

BAFTA went for Roma for Best Film, Director, Cinematography and Film Not in the English Language. No real surprises but there was a question whether it would be able to go all the way and best The Favourite and Green Book for Best Film. The Favourite took the most wins however, landing seven of its 12 nominations, including Leading Actress (Olivia Colman, besting Glenn Close) and Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz (a default win, depending on how you look at that race).

That BAFTA puzzle piece complicated things quite a bit. In the nine years since the expanded Oscar Best Picture era, BAFTA has aligned five times – and only in the first five years. The last four years in row BAFTA and Oscar split. Roma‘s lack of a PGA win or even a SAG Cast nomination, the two main industry guilds leading up to the Oscars put its frontrunner status in a state of flux. It has DGA, which was a given. In a decade that has seen more Best Picture/Director splits than ever it could mean that Cuarón wins there but BP goes to something else like Green Book or BlacKkKlansman. Each year is a test of the preferential ballot and this year more than ever. The obstacles Roma faces are more than any film has had since the expanded era. If it can truly overcome them all the Oscar game will begin entirely new.

I feel comfortable with my acting predictions: Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Glenn Close (The Wife), Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk). The first three have the hardware they need to win and anyone else would be a genuine surprise, statistically. Only Ali has everything. Supporting Actress is a category that has many people pulling their hair out and indeed, SAG and BAFTA made it very difficult. King’s snub from both them, while still winning Critics’ Choice and the Golden Globes, throws things into chaos. But for me, and I’m sure many others, it was Emily Blunt’s SAG win over Oscar-nominated competition (Oscar nominations came out as SAG voting was in its final week) that showed the weakness of Amy Adams (Vice), Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz (both of The Favourite) in the race. The King campaign has just dominated this week, with Oscar voting ending on Monday. Weisz’s BAFTA win isn’t to be ignored, but I still feel it’s a default win. I won’t discount Roma‘s Marina de Tavira for a moment as a major spoiler if the Academy is in a sweeping mood for the film on its way to Best Picture.

There are still some crucial guilds left to speak up before the Oscars, and certainly before final predictions and all happening this weekend, including the Makeup and Hairstyling guild and Cinema Audio Society (the 16th) and then the Writers Guild of America, Motion Picture Sound Editors (the 17th) and then finally the Costume Designers Guild on the 19th.

As we enter the last week before the Academy Awards on the 24th, it’s impossible not to mention the barrage of fumbles, foibles and fuckups from Oscars’ producers Glenn Weiss and Donna Gigliotti and AMPAS president John Bailey. The moving of four categories – Film Editing, Cinematography, Makeup & Hairstyling and Live-Action Short – to commercial breaks for inclusion later in the show, has been met with such a resounding and loud declaration of anger not just from ‘social media’ but from the industry itself it’s hard not to think that this show is going to be a royal failure. Each day, each hour that ticks away is another that the show can’t turn the clock back. We’ll see if this week brings any changes but I remain skeptical. [UPDATE: The Academy reverses decision]
