At just 14, Yonas Kibreab has already built an impressive filmography that includes Better Things, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Sweet Tooth, and several animated Disney shows. Now Kibreab is the star of his very own Pixar film, playing the title role in Elio.
Elio is a young orphan living with his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña) near a military base. He is obsessed with space and dreams of communicating with aliens who can take him far away from his miserable life on Earth. Then one day they arrive and Elio finds himself on an adventure beyond anything he could have imagined.
When we spoke recently, Kibreab was a bundle of teenage enthusiasm, excited to share what it is like to voice a Pixar character, working with his directors Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian and Adrian Molina, and how thrilled he was to finally meet his co-stars in person.
Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation will release Elio in theaters on June 20.
