On the Shelf: ‘Mortal Kombat’ Kollection, Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits, ‘Crime 101,’ ‘It Was Just an Accident’ Lead the 4K Physical Media releases for the Week of 6/29/26
It’s an action-packed final week of releases within June of 2026, leading the charge two massive box sets from our friends from Arrow Video. First up is the Mortal Kombat Kollection, which sees the first two original Mortal Kombat getting a proper 4K release as the rebooted franchise sequel hit theaters earlier this summer. In 1995, Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, delivered a fast paced, crowd-pleasing adaptation that pits Earth’s greatest fighters against the forces of Outworld in a no-holds-barred tournament for the fate of humanity. Featuring unforgettable characters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and the thunderous Raiden, the film blends martial arts choreography, fantasy world-building and a now legendary electronic soundtrack to create one of the most influential video game movies of its era. The saga continued with 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, expanding the scale and mythology as the battle spills beyond the tournament into an-all-out war between realms. With higher stakes, new fighters, monstrous adversaries and epic confrontations, the sequel embraces the franchise’s operatic excess and supernatural chaos, pushing the Mortal Kombat universe into full fantasy spectacle. Restored and stuffed with extras that include audio commentaries from director Paul W.S. Anderson, director John R. Leonetti, behind the scenes featurettes about the films action set-pieces, and doubled sided posters of the original posters, you’ll want to grab this collection and FINISH IT over and over again.
The other box set from Arrow is an expansive collection of the Hong Kong action legend Jackie Chan, featuring a six-film run in the early 1990s that were international smash hits and made him a household name to American audiences. The Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits starts with 1994’s Drunken Master II, which sees Jackie back as Wong Fei-hung, the role that first made his name, and teaming up with Shaw Brothers legends Lau Kar-leung and Ti Lung to deliver the ultimate, era-defining love letter to classic kung fu. The following year saw Jackie’s first number one box office success in America thanks to Rumble in the Bronx, in which he visits New York City and must defend his friends and family against vicious street gangs and ruthless smugglers, followed by Thunderbolt in which Jackie is forced to compete behind the wheel against a criminal street racer who has kidnapped his sister. In the fourth entry of the much-beloved Police Story series (also known as First Strike), Jackie chases a stolen nuclear warhead on an explosive globe-trotting secret mission; Chan’s “big brother” Sammo Hung takes the director’s chair in Mr. Nice Guy as Jackie plays a TV chef in Australia forced to do bloody battle against the mob; and finally in Who Am I?, our hero is an ass-kicking amnesiac on the trail of a mysterious new power source as well as his own lost identity. Inside this massive collection lies special features that includes new commentary by martial arts cinema experts Frank Djeng and F.J. DeSanto, interviews with multiple stuntmen for each film, press kit interviews with Jackie Chan, and three six-part documentary about the Breakout success of Chan’s career in conversation with these films. It’s a vital pick up this week for an fan of cinema and admirer of Chan’s long, celebrated career.
In taking a turn to something more modern, Amazon’s heist, crime film from earlier this year, Crime 101, arrives on 4K this week. When a master thief (Chris Hemsworth) and an insurance broker (Halle Berry) join forces for a big heist, while a determined detective (Mark Ruffalo) pursues them to prevent the multi-million-dollar crime. Directed by Bart Layton, and also starring Monica Barbaro, Barry Keoghan, and Nick Nolte, this surprisingly entertaining flick recalls the highs of Michael Mann’s Heat but with an updated twist. Per our review from Jay Ledbetter from earlier this year, Crime 101 “can stand on its own” as a memorable action packed spectacle and “is a movie that deserves to be taken seriously” as a film within it’s genre and on the whole.
Last up this week is one of the best films of the decade so far, and the rightful winner of the 2025 Palme d’Or winner from the Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi; It Was Just an Accident. What starts as a chance encounter slowly turns into a moral thriller about if revenge is enough to condemn the actions of the past, and if that will give the victim full satisfaction. Laced with humor, tension, and one of the most chilling endings you will ever see, Panahi takes aim at the pain that his country has inflected on him and his fellow citizens and creates a film that is an towing act of forgiveness. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 98th Academy Awards, it’s exquisite masterpiece that is a must buy this week from our friends at Criterion, whom have highlighted this celebrated directors work in the past, and has given us a physical copy of his latest work of poetic artistry.
