2017 Critics’ Choice Awards Movie Nominations: La La Lands, Moonlight, Arrival Lead the Way
[divider style=”solid” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
Damien Chazelle’s La La Land led the 2017 Critics’ Choice Movie Award nominations with 12, while Moonlight and Arrival followed close with 10 apiece and all mentioned in Best Picture.
Other films landing a spot in the top category were Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Lion, Loving, Manchester by the Sea and Sully. Curiously missing from that list is the critically lauded film Jackie. The Natalie Portman-starring biopic did earn nominations for Portman as well as for its screenplay, production design, costume design and makeup and hairstyling but missed on the top two awards, Picture and Director.
The critics’ organization (the BFCA – Broadcast Film Critics Association) has come under fire in recent years for some controversial decisions and clear pandering to Oscar voters. Last year, the group didn’t see Star Wars: The Force Awakens in time for nominations and decided, post-nominations, to vote the film into Best Picture, giving them a top 11. This year, the group moved up their nominations and awards show to beat the competition and in doing so missed out on viewing Martin Scorsese’s Silence in time. No word on if that will magically appear on their nomination list, Satellite Awards style.
This year’s awards will air live on December 11th at 8 p.m. ET on A&E and once again be hosted by Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller.
