American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Nominations: Silence nabs its first major guild nom; Bradford Young is 1st African-American ever nominated

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) nominations are out and Martin Scorsese’s religious epic Silence has finally grabbed a major guild mention. The late release of the film and Paramount’s decision to limit screeners to a few select groups hasn’t done the film any favors in this season’s awards race. But for a group of only about 340 members, clearly enough saw it.
Silence (lensed by Rodrigo Prieto) is joined by Arrival (Bradford Young), La La Land, (Linus Sandgren), Lion (Greig Fraser) and Moonlight (James Laxton). Prieto has been nominated here twice before (for Brokeback Mountain and Babel) and was Oscar-nominated for the former. The rest are first-time nominees here.
Bradford Young is the first African American nominee by this organization. If he is Oscar-nominated he will also become the first.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Critics Choice Association (CCA), San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle (SFBAFCC) and the International Press Academy.
