2014 Creative Arts Emmys Winners: True Detective and Sherlock Win the Night with 4 Trophies Apiece
It was a big night for PBS’s Sherlock and HBO’s True Detective as each program walked away with four wins apiece, the best of the night. Not far behind was the other buzzed freshman season of the comedy Orange is the New Black from Netflix, netting three wins including Casting and Guest Actress for Uzo Aduba who bested her co-star and co-nominees Natasha Lyonne and Laverne Cox. Allison Janney nabbed a win for her guest turn on Masters of Sex. It’s her 5th Emmy win in three different categories. Joe Morton won on the male side of drama guest stars, giving Scandal two back to wins in this category. Jimmy Fallon was also a repeat winner for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live, where he won two years ago. Jane Lynch walked off with Reality Host for Hollywood Game Night, marking her 2nd career Emmy.
Two strange and shocking losses came in the form of Documentary Series where Cosmos lost after winning a slew of awards before that. Worse, it lost in a tie with PBS’s American Masters and Showtime’s Years of Living Dangerously. Netflix’s Oscar-nominated The Square suffered an equal fate, losing Documentary Special after winning Directing, Cinematography and Editing.
The Simpsons‘s Harry Shearer won for Outstanding Voice-Over. He was the only remaining original cast member to be Emmy-less until tonight. Whoopi Goldberg lost out on Outstanding Narrator (to Jeremy Irons), thereby keeping her EGOT illegitimacy alive.
