20 Advance in Visual Effects Oscar Race: ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Isle of Dogs,’ ‘Mary Poppins,’ more
20 films will compete for a Visual Effects Oscar nomination, the Academy announced today. They include Black Panther, Isle of Dogs, Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place.
Curiously missing from the list was Annihilation. Alex Garland’s previous film, Ex Machina, was a surprise Oscar winner in this category for 2015.
Also missing was high profile box hits like Deadpool 2 and Venom as well as A Wrinkle in Time, Rampage and Pacific Rim: Uprising.
The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration. Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.
