The television side of the Golden Globes is often more adventurous than the film side in both its nominees and its winners. They love newcomers and new shows quickly but also tend to drop them year to year. Last year’s Drama Series and Drama Actress winners (The Affair and its star Ruth Wilson) weren’t even nominated this year. The Drama Actress category has two newcomers, two Emmy nominees and the most recent Emmy winner. Drama Series has newcomers and Emmy winners as well and this year feels like the Globes might mirror the Emmys more than they usually do.
Here are my predictions for the 2016 Golden Globes (Television):
DRAMA SERIES
Game of Thrones
I wouldn’t rule out a win for Mr. Robot here though.
DRAMA – ACTOR
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Like Drama Series, Rami Malek could spoil this race for Jon Hamm but he finally got his Emmy so he’ll be ok.
DRAMA – ACTRESS
Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder
Outlander fans will lose their minds if Caitriona Balfe loses but Emmy winner Davis seems like a good bet. Taraji P. Henson shouldn’t be discounted either, hers is the only show also nominated for Drama Series.
COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES
Transparent
Counting on a repeat win for Transparent here. Weirdly, this was the first year Veep has been nominated by the Globes in the Series category, maybe that means something.
COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES – ACTRESS
Jamie Lee Curtis, Scream Queens
Curtis won this category 16 years ago and Julia Louis-Dreyfus has never won (despite being the Emmy winner in this category four years running). This is a comeback for Curtis.
COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES – ACTOR
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Repeat winner for an even better season.
TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES
Fargo
Wolf Hall could spoil if the HFPA feels this is too “American.”
TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – ACTOR
Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall
He might not win on the film side that night (or he’ll be a double winner) but this feels like a safe bet.
TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – ACTRESS
Kirsten Dunst, Fargo
Will the HFPA have a flashback to Madonna beating Frances McDormand in Fargo? Hopefully not. This is actually a tough category with Felicity Huffman, Queen Latifah and newcomer Sarah Hay giving Dunst chase. As long as it’s not Lady Gaga. But, watch out.
SERIES, TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Regina King, American Crime
Going with the Emmy winner here, it’s a tough race to call.
SERIES, TV-MOVIE OR MINISERIES – SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christian Slater, Mr. Robot
Would be strange for Slater to win without Malek but the Globes don’t really care about that kind of thing.
