Newcomer MR. ROBOT, wins Best Drama in a year of shocking winners

As is often the case on the TV sides of things at the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went for the new and random, handing out their top awards to USA’s freshman cyber thriller Mr. Robot, Amazon’s sophomore music dramedy Mozart in the Jungle, and PBS’s historical miniseries Wolf Hall. The first two shows also won a second award each, with Mr. Robot winning Best Supporting Actor (Christian Slater) and Mozart taking home Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Gael Garcia Bernal), making them the only programs to take home more than one award for the night.

In the other acting categories, the HFPA alternated between fresh faces and the established names. Jon Hamm managed one final win for Mad Men in Best Actor in a Drama Series, his first win since 2008 for the first season. Taraji P. Henson and Rachel Bloom took home the Lead Actress awards for their freshman shows Empire and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Last year’s winner for Best Drama Series took home another Golden Globe despite being dropped from that category, with Maura Tierney winning for Best Supporting Actress. In the Limited Series categories, Oscar Isaac won Best Actor for his work on Show Me a Hero, and in perhaps the most controversial win of the night, Lady Gaga took home Best Actress for American Horror Story: Hotel, despite mixed reviews and tough competition from the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Queen Latifah and Felicity Huffman.
