Moonlight was the big winner tonight at the 2016 IFP Gotham Awards. The film took Best Feature and Best Screenplay for its director, Barry Jenkins. It also earned a previously announced juried award for its ensemble as well as the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. Moonlight is only Jenkins’ second film; he was previously nominated by the Gothams for his first film, 2008’s Medicine for Melancholy, for Breakthrough Director. This year, that award was won by Trey Edward Shults for Krisha.
Manchester by the Sea came in with the most nominations but managed a single win, Casey Affleck for Best Actor. Affleck was heavily favored for this win but this marked the first real face-off between Moonlight and Manchester in Feature and Screenplay categories, both of which Moonlight triumphed in. While the Gothams aren’t necessarily the best bellwether for the Oscars, it does start the awards season off in a good place for Moonlight.
French cinema legend Isabelle Hupert grabbed Best Actress for Elle and begins her march to the Dolby in what aims to be a very stiff year of competition in that category. O.J.: Made in America won Best Documentary and Anya Taylor-Joy surprised in Breakthrough Actor for The Witch.
In addition to the competitive awards, Gotham Award Tributes were given to actors Amy Adams and Ethan Hawke, director Oliver Stone, and the Industry Tribute recipient was producer Arnon Milchan.
