2016 MTV Movie Awards Nominations: Star Wars Leads with 11, Diversity Reigns
Just when you thought awards season was over…
Often acting as the anti-Oscars, the nominations for the 2016 MTV Movie Awards reflect some Oscar picks as well as a broader level of diversity in its choices that include Straight Outta Compton, Creed and Concussion among its nominees.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens leads the pack with 11 nominations and Deadpool, the newest Marvel blockbuster, comes in with 8 – including Movie of the Year. The traditional ‘Best Kiss’ category is here but thankfully MTV has done away with the sillier ‘Scared as Sh*t’ performance category and opted instead for some more ‘grown-up’ categories like Documentary, True Story and Virtual Performance. Women were well-represented in the Breakthrough, Hero and Comedy performances categories, making up 50% or more of the nominees there and Jennifer Lawrence grabs the only female slot in the Best Action Performance category for her final turn as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.
Oscars’ Best Actor and Best Actress winners, Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and Brie Larson (Room), still have more awards to possibly grab for their films as DiCaprio is nominated for Male Performance and Best Fight and Larson is nominated for Breakthrough Performance.
Movie fans can cast their votes for their favorites at MovieAwards.MTV.com, through Sunday, March 20th. Fans will also be allowed to vote for the coveted “Movie of the Year” directly on Google — just Google “MTV Vote” and make your pick.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, both 2016 Movie Awards nominees themselves, will host this year’s ceremony, which air on April 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The show, which marks its 25th anniversary, will be held outdoors at the famed Warner Bros. Studios.
