Damien Chazelle won the Directors Guild of America’s highest honor tonight for his awards-laden La La Land. He won the Golden Globe last month and the film earned 14 Oscar nominations a week and a half ago, including Best Director for Chazelle. The DGA winner has gone on to win the Oscar 14 of the last 17 times. Only once since 2004 has a director missed and that’s because he wasn’t nominated (Ben Affleck for Argo).
Double-nominated Garth Davis (Lion) won for his first-time direction of the film Lion. Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones) bested a pair of heavyweights from The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (John Singleton and the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy) to win the Drama Series prize for the episode “Battle of the Bastards,” which also won him the Emmy. Becky Martin won for Veep for the episode “Inauguration Day.” Steven Zallian won in TV Movie/Miniseries for The Night Of.
Tina Mabry won in Children’s Programming for An American Girl Story and American Vice upset The Amazing Race in Reality Series.
