2017 Oscar Predictions: Frontrunner Friday Sees Some Close Races in the Final Stretch

We’re just over a week away from the Oscars and as we head into the final stretch something surprising is happening. We’re seeing cracks in previously ‘locked’ categories, opening the door for former frontrunners to be overtaken by late-breaking films and performances. Specifically, Best Actor is now a true horserace with Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Denzel Washington (Fences) providing us with a true nail-biter that won’t be settled until that envelope is opened. Supporting Actor is also now a real race. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) has stumbled a bit on the road to Oscar and Lion‘s Dev Patel picked up the slack with his BAFTA win last weekend. Combine the facts that Moonlight seems to have plateaued a bit while Lion is just taking off, not to mention those egregious FYC ads from TWC, and you have the makings of an upset. Something to note: the last year that none of the four acting winners did not play a real-life person was 1997. With Emma Stone now the indisputable frontrunner in Best Actress, Viola Davis in Supporting Actress, and Andrew Garfield not in play in Best Actor, that leaves Supporting Actor to keep that going. Dev Patel is the only nominee playing a real-life person. Although, you could make the argument that Ali’s Juan is based on a real person in playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney’s childhood but it’s a stretch.

Here is your Frontrunner Friday predictions for February 17th.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
