2018 Cannes Official Lineup: Spike Lee, Jean-Luc-Godard In Competition; Women Still Underrepresented
The announcement of the film playing the 71st Cannes Film Festival has been announced and they include Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Livre D’image, Jafar Panahi’s 3 Faces and Alice Rohrwacher’s Lazzaro Felice. Two Americans are in the lineup: Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman from Focus Features and David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake from A24.
Some notable misses from this morning’s announcement include Brian De Palma’s Domino, Mia Hanson-Løve’s Maya, Mike Leigh’s Peterloo, Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built and Naomi Kawase’s Visions. With 18 films announced, at least two or three more films will be announced in the coming weeks along with the jury that will decide the Palme D’or under president Cate Blanchett. Of the 17 In Competition titles revealed just three are directed by women (Eva Husson, Nadine Labaki and Alice Rohrwacher). Un Certain Regard averaged a little better with four of 12 titles directed by women. Last year, jury member Jessica Chastain tore into the festival during the closing press conference on the lack of female representation both in terms of stories being told and the directors telling them.
Previously announced out of competition titles include the world premiere of Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Director’s Fortnight and Cannes Classics (including the restored 70mm of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey) will be announced in the coming days.
