2018 Oscar Predictions: SUPPORTING ACTRESS (April)
[divider style=”normal” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
As with Supporting Actor this month, Supporting Actress is the same top 5 as last month with just a few tweaks in placement.
Julianne Moore not only remains at #1 with Wonderstruck, she improves her point total. Snippets of the film were shown at CinemaCon last month to strong word of mouth and Moore playing multiple characters will only help keep her at the top spot.
Melissa Leo (Novitiate) stays at #2 but with fewer points as her main competitors down the list have started chipping away at her placement. Those competitors, Hong Chau (Downsizing) and Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour) find themselves tied at #3 but with Chau making the biggest move.

Michelle Pfeiffer (mother!) is safe at #5 this month, nearly double the #6 Claire Foy (Breathe), who actually makes a huge jump from #16.. Just behind Foy is Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), in her first feature in four years. Rachel McAdams (Disobedience) trails not too far behind.
Looking for surprise contenders or sleepers we could see Kaela Settle in The Greatest Showman. She has a show-stopping number in the original musical and 20th Century Fox is going to pull out all the stops for the Christmas Day release. Nicole Kidman is having a banner year, having just ended her limited series Big Little Lies to some of the best reviews of her career. She will follow that with possible Cannes Film Festival appearances of Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties and/or Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
This time last year, the Gold Rush Gang had four of the five eventual Oscar nominees in our top 10 with only Viola Davis missing due to her category placement being up in the air at the time.
Here are the 2018 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress for April from the Gold Rush Gang.
Green – moves up from last month
Red – moves down from last month
Blue – debut/new entry
