The TIFF Cinematheque programming team has assembled a rich Festival lineup for 2018 that not only exclusively features titles from TIFF’s own film library, but will also include an exciting list of guest introductions soon to
be announced. TIFF preserves a collection of over 3000 prints and DCPs, spanning over 100 years of cinema history.

“Emphasizing film preservation and medium specificity is a huge priority for us,” said Brad Deane, TIFF Cinematheque Senior Manager. “We are privileged to have access to our Film Reference Library’s
extraordinary archive. We hope to remind audiences that film preservation efforts carried out by archives across the globe are absolutely critical to the future of cinema and the creation of unmissable film experiences such as these.”

Part of the year-long, worldwide centenary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth, TIFF Cinematheque will show one of the Swedish master’s most influential works, Persona . The film is one of three titles to screen in 35mm.

A rare print of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc will also be shown, featuring live piano accompaniment by Toronto musician Marilyn Lerner; as well as Claire Denis’ Chocolat, which first screened at TIFF in 1988, her first feature to ever be shown at the Festival. Denis will also be presenting the World Premiere of her newest film, High Life, starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche.

Zacharias Kunuk’s Caméra d’Or winner Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner — frequently cited as one of the most important Canadian films of all time, and the first feature ever to be written, directed, and acted entirely in Inuktitut, will also screen as part of the Festival’s TIFF Cinematheque lineup.

As part of TIFF’s commitment to cinema heritage and its mission to share film with a wide audience, tickets to all TIFF Cinematheque screenings during the Festival are free and will be distributed at the Steve & Rashmi
Gupta Box Office at TIFF Bell Lightbox on a first-come, first-served basis two hours before each film screening.

The films screening as part of the TIFF Cinematheque program are:

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner Zacharias Kunuk | Canada (2001)

Chocolat Claire Denis | France (1988)

The Passion of Joan of Arc ( La passion de Jeanne d’Arc ) Carl Theodor Dreyer | France (1928)

Persona Ingmar Bergman | Sweden (1966)

The 43rd Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6 to 16, 2018.
