2020 Oscar Nomination Predictions: SUPPORTING ACTOR (June)

Like Supporting Actress for Margot Robbie, the Cannes hit Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood (Sony/Columbia) brought raves in for Brad Pitt, including some ‘best of career’ mentions. The multi-Oscar nominee and Best Picture Oscar winner (for 12 Years a Slave) could be primed for his first acting win. That is, if he’s run in supporting at all. By all accounts it’s a co-lead role and performance and I’ve heard rumblings that Sony is considering putting Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio side by side in Best Actor.

A big move comes with Oscar winner Christian Bale in 20th Century Fox’s major awards and box office play Ford v Ferrari. Marketing on the late fall film has kicked into high gear with a poster and a hot trailer that debuted during the NBA finals. Like Pitt and DiCaprio above, we still have word on whether Bale and/or co-star Matt Damon will be run as lead or supporting.

Willem Dafoe is looking to make it three nominations in a row with A24’s The Lighthouse. After its Cannes premiere, Dafoe (and his co-star Robert Pattinson) received raves and this weird, dark indie could be a b-line for Dafoe.

Those moves up means someone’s got to move down and this month it’s Anthony Hopkins in The Pope and Joe Pesci in The Irishman (both Netflix). Each are still very much in the game although one wonders how much campaigning either will want to do come awards season. Both Oscar winners have not come near nominations in many years and that might be a crucial element to getting them to the Dolby.

Here are my 2020 Oscar Nomination Predictions in Supporting Actor for June 10, 2019.
