2021 Golden Globes: How to watch, who’s presenting; HFPA to address lack of diversity in its ranks

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards will air live tonight starting at 5pm PT/8pm ET on NBC with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning as hosts for the fourth time and the first since 2015.

The show will also be available to stream online on NBC via Roku, AT&T TV, Fubo TV, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV and YouTube TV. Each service offers a free trial for first-timers, so if you don’t already have or subscribe to one of these services, this is a good time to check them out.

Tonight’s awards, which cover both film and television, will announce winners in 14 film and 11 TV categories, with special awards honoring Jane Fonda, who will receive the annual Cecil B. DeMille Award for film and Norman Lear, being honored with the Carol Burnett Award for television.

Amidst the unfolding and ongoing controversy over the lack of diversity among the ranks of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), who puts on the Golden Globes, the group said they will address the issue directly on the show this evening. It was revealed this week that the HFPA has no Black members among their group of 87 US-based foreign journalists and hasn’t in over two decades. Backlash also arose when their film nominations were announced and no Black-led films were nominated in the Best Motion Picture categories. Several actors and directors took to their social media to decry the lack of Black members using the #TimesUpGlobes hashtag, including some of tonight’s presenters, and Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ellen Pompeo penned a letter to the HFPA to make significant changes to their lineup and for white Hollywood to speak up instead of leaving it to Black Hollywood to demand it (“This is not their problem. It’s ours.”).

Golden Globe predictions, Motion Picture: ‘Trial’ and error as the HFPA is once again mired in controversy

People magazine revealed last week that for the first time ever, the Globes, in association with Feeding America, will be including a limited number of frontline and essential workers to attend the show in both locations.

All audience members will be tested for COVID-19 in advance and undergo health screenings and temperature checks before entering either venue. Inside, social distancing guidelines will be in place and only guests from the same household will be seated together.

There are several pre-shows leading up the main event, including E!, the official lead-in by the HFPA and NBC’s own coverage.

E’s Live From E!: Golden Globes will begin at 6pm ET/ 3pm PT. Giuliana Rancic and Karamo host the show with interviews live from the Beverly Hilton. E!’s style correspondent Zanna Roberts Rassi and The Rundown host Erin Lim will join.

The HFPA Presents: Globes Countdown Live, the official pre-show for the 2021 Golden Globes, will stream live from the official Golden Globes Twitter account and on GoldenGlobes.com from 6:30-8pm ET/3:30-5pm PT in the U.S. Sofia Carson and Access Hollywood entertainment reporter Zuri Hall will host live from the Beverly Hilton.

NBC’s Golden Globes Pre-Show kicks off at 7pm ET/4pm PT. hosted by Jane Lynch and Susan Kelechi Watson, featuring live interviews with nominees. Instead of the traditional red carpet, the hour-long telecast will feature memorable moments in Golden Globe history.
