2022 Creative Arts Emmys Night One: RuPaul continues reign, while ‘Adele: One Night Only’ takes home multiple awards
The Creative Arts Emmys are here, with night one happening tonight, announcing winners in 45 categories across picture editing, sound mixing, production design, technical direction and more. The ceremony was held in Downtown Los Angeles.
Presenters tonight included Judd Apatow, Monica Aldama and Morgan Simianer, Chelsea Lakzani and Chrishell Stause, RuPaul Charles, Randy Rainbow, Cat Deeley, Nicole Byer, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Adam Pally and Jon Garbus, Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka and Shangela, Bill Nye, Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, and Chip and Joanna Gaines.
The Emmys have already given out their Juried Awards, in which achievement awards are given out after being reviewed by a panel of industry peers. Some of these winners included Arcane, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, The House and Love, Death & Robots, all winning at least one award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation (Arcane winning three!). We’re Here took home two juried awards by winning Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program and Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. Other winners included Annie Live! and Home Before Dark.
Most of the categories for night one were for Variety, Nonfiction and Reality Programs, with awards for animated programs and voice-over performances. RuPaul’s Drag Race went into the night with nine nominations, including nominations for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Non-fiction or Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program, and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program. The series finished night one with two wins, winning Outstanding Production Design and RuPaul Charles winning for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program, marking his seventh win in the category.
Variety series such as A Black Lady Sketch Show, Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver competed against each other in multiple categories such as Outstanding Direction for a Variety Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Ultimately, A Black Lady Sketch Show took home the award for Outstanding Direction for a Variety Series as well as Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming.
Love On The Spectrum U.S. took home multiple awards tonight, including Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Another reality series that did well tonight was Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, which took home the awards for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality Program and Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program. Non-fiction program The Beatles: Get Back also had a good night, nabbing the awards for Outstanding Documentary or Non-fiction Program and Outstanding Direction for a Documentary or Non-Fiction Program.
When it comes to music, both the Adele special and the Beatles series took home multiple awards each. Adele: One Night Only took home all five awards that it was nominated for, including categories such as Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded), Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special. The Beatles: Get Back took home Outstanding Sound Editing for a Non-fiction or Reality Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Non-fiction or Reality Program and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Non-fiction Program.
On top of the three awards it took home for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Arcane also took home the award for Outstanding Animated Program tonight.
