The 32nd annual Gotham Awards are being held tonight from Cipriani Wall Street in New York City where The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once won Best Feature, the top award of the evening.
Focus Features’ TÁR led the field with five: Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Lead Performance (Cate Blanchett) and two in Best Supporting Performance (Nina Hoss and Noémie Merlant), winning tonight for Todd Field’s screenplay.
A24 had the biggest night, with wins for Best Feature (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Breakthrough Director (Charlotte Wells for Aftersun) and Ke Huy Quan in Supporting Performance for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The non-gendered acting categories, which leaned heavily to women in lead (7-3) with nominees Cate Blanchett in TÁR, Danielle Deadwyler in Till, Dale Dickey in A Love Song, Taylor Russell in Bones and All, Thandiwe Newton in God’s Country, Aubrey Plaza in Emily the Criminal and Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once, found its winner in Deadwyler, who was not present but had her director Chinonye Chukwu accept on her behalf.
The supporting performance section are split evenly 5-5 for women and men with Raúl Castillo in The Inspection, Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway, Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Mark Rylance in Bones and All and Ben Whishaw in Women Talking. Ke Huy Quan won, in the first step to his career comeback and in a tearful speech recalling the decades-long gap in his career with “This time last year I was just hoping for a job.”
On the television side, Pachinko, Mo, We Need to Talk About Cosby and Ben Whishaw were the top winners.
A wealth of special honors and tributes were handed out, including Performer Tributes to Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) and Adam Sandler (Hustle), in a raucous speech, the Ensemble Tribute to the cast of Fire Island, Focus Features’ Peter Kujawski and Jason Cassidy receiving an Industry Tribute, the Filmmaker Tribute to Gina Prince-Bythewood, the Innovator Tribute to Audible creator Don Katz and the Icon Tribute to the late Sidney Poitier. Head of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera also received a special honor and Focus Features’ Chairman, Peter Kujawski and Vice Chairman, Jason Cassidy received the Industry Tribute.
