2024 Golden Globe Predictions – Television: Expect a ‘Shōgun’ Dominance
The Golden Globe nominations this year – when it comes to TV – will likely feature many of the year’s most-watch programs, new and returning, with a few nominations for big stars that should come as no surprise.
With performers such as Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jodie Foster all in the television ring this year, the nominations will surely reflect their star-power on the small screen. While AppleTV+’s Disclaimer didn’t make a huge splash, it doesn’t seem likely for the HFPA to ignore Alfonso Cuaron or the show’s leading lady, Cate Blanchett. Jake Gyllenhaal will also likely grab a nomination for his performance in Presumed Innocent, while Jodie Foster will easily earn a nomination for True Detective: Night Country. It isn’t too surprising that all three of the aforementioned performances are for limited series, an easier avenue for massive stars to commit to a television role: don’t let it last long!
New shows will play a huge role in the nominations, with series like Fallout, Matlock, Shōgun, Nobody Wants This, and English Teacher poised to gain nominations in major categories. When it comes to television, the Globes are historically attracted to novelty, so these shows will likely dominate some categories. Comedies like Nodody Wants This and English Teacher will see their leads – Kristen Bell & Adam Brody and Brian Jordan Alvarez, respectively – with nominations Monday morning. On the opposite end, What We Do in the Shadows is in its final season now, and after Matt Berry’s Emmy nomination a few months back, could see itself grab a few final nominations from the HFPA.
One of the biggest shows of the year, Shōgun, will be a huge player when nominations come out, Anna Sawai an almost-definite lock in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Hiroyuki Sanada is poised to join his co-star by receiving a complementary nomination in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. The series will be the Drama to beat in any category it has nominations in. English Teacher is the comedy to look out for, as I’m sure that the more nominations it receives, the more its creator and lead, Brian Jordan Alvarez, will continue to post videos of himself dancing in a promotion for the show that could only be thought of by him.
