28th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards: ‘CODA’ and ‘Squid Game’ are top winners

The 28th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were held tonight and CODA was the big winner for motion pictures, the only film to take two awards. The Apple Original Film that premiered at Sundance 2021 won the org’s top prize, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Star and Oscar winner Marlee Matlin gave Apple TV+ a big shoutout for spending a history-making $25M for the film. Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant and Matlin of CODA are the first deaf actors to be recognized in the motion picture ensemble category, and Kotsur is the first deaf performer to land an individual acting nomination and win.

Jessica Chastain won Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture for her turn as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, upsetting fellow Oscar nominees Nicole Kidman (who remains SAG-less for film) and Olivia Colman. Will Smith (King Richard) followed up his Golden Globe win with a win here, his first major industry award of his career.

Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) turned their first nominations into first wins in the supporting motion picture categories.

Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series went to the 19-actor ensemble of Succession, which led the television nominations. It eked out a win over Squid Game, which bested the HBO family saga in the individual categories. Accepting on behalf of the show, star Brian Cox spoke about Ukraine and gave a shoutout to the President of Ukraine, but also recognized the artists of Russia, and said he hoped the people who oppose the war can make a shift.

Squid Game made Screen Actors Guild history as the first non-English language series earn any SAG nominations and made more tonight as the Korean blockbuster earned first-ever wins for Male Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae), Female Actor in a Drama Series (Jung Ho-yeon), and Stunt Ensemble for a non-English language series.

Jean Smart (Hacks) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) steamrolled on their awards run with wins here tonight for Female and Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Lasso also bested The Great, Hacks, The Kominsky Method and Only Murders in the Building for the Ensemble in a Comedy Series prize, its first win after two nominations. Michael Keaton won Male Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie for Dopesick and had a bit of a Christine Lahti moment as he was in the bathroom when his category was announced, leaving presenter Salma Hayek more than a few moments onstage alone. He then spoke at length about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the acting background of President Zelesnkyy (as Brian Cox did) and then hit an emotional precipice acknowledging the loss of his nephew and sister to the opioid epidemic in the U.S., the subject of his limited series.

Oscar, Emmy, SAG, Tony, BAFTA and Golden Globe winner Helen Mirren was the 2022 recipient of the Life Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild, which was presented to her by Oscar and Screen Actors Guild award winner Kate Winslet remotely from her home in England and Cate Blanchett in-person at the ceremony. She is the 57th recipient of the award which has gone to the likes of Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Betty White, Sidney Poitier and Rita Moreno.

The hostless show was simulcast live on TNT and TBS from The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and for the first time, the ceremony will be available the following day on HBO Max.
