32nd SAG Actor Awards Nominations: ‘One Battle After Another’ Sets New Record for Film; ‘The Studio’ Tops for TV

Nominations for The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA (formerly the SAG Awards) were announced this morning by Janelle James (Abbott Elementary) and Connor Storrie (Heated Rivalry) where One Battle After Another emerged victorious with a record-setting seven nominations, more than any film in the 32 years of the guild, breaking the previous record of five, set by six films, including last year’s Wicked.
The Paul Thomas Anderson film earned nominations for Cast in a Motion Picture, Male Actor in a Leading Role for Leonardo DiCaprio, Female Actor in a Leading Role for Chase Infiniti, Male Actor in a Supporting Role for both Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Teyana Taylor and Stunt Ensemble.
Sinners was also a strong performer with five nominations (the previous record); Cast in a Motion Picture, Male Actor in a Leading Role for Michael B. Jordan, Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Miles Caton, Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Wunmi Mosaku and Stunt Ensemble.
Hamnet and Marty Supreme made strong showings with three nominations apiece as did Frankenstein, not only netting a nomination for Jacob Elordi but also in Cast and Stunt Ensemble. Taking a look at the cast lineups reveals that, because of the guild rules about actors’ title cards, the titular Hamnet, Jacobi Jupe, is not among the nominated cast. His brother Noah, however, who portrays an actor playing Hamlet in the film, did.
Timothée Chalamet, who won Male Actor in a Motion Picture last year for A Complete Unknown, has the chance to make SAG history if he repeats this year for Marty Supreme. While several actors have won more than one lead trophy here, no one has done it in back to back year.
His main competition, Leonardo DiCaprio, ties Denzel Washington for the most nominations in this category (6) with his nod today.
Faring poorly, and traditionally so, were non-English language films which had zero presence today. Not even Critics Choice and Golden Globe favorite Sentimental Value could break into these all-English lineups, making it a bad day for NEON overall as Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent also didn’t make the cut.
Other surprising snubs include Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in The Smashing Machine, Joel Edgerton in Train Dreams, Adam Sandler in Jay Kelly and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked. After a then-record showing for the film last year, Ariana Grande was the sole returning nominee for the sequel.
In television, The Studio earned a field-best five nominations, landing it in a seven-way tie for second-most nominations ever for a television show while Adolescence and The White Lotus came in with four apiece. Unlike motion picture and comedy and drama series, limited series’ do not have a cast or ensemble category.
The comedy series ensemble nominees are Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building and The Studio.
The drama series ensemble nominees are The Diplomat, Landman, The Pitt, Severance and The White Lotus.
Final voting to determine the winners will take place from Jan. 14 through February 27 at noon PT. The 32nd annual Actor Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA, will air live on Netflix on March 1.
