41st Spirit Awards Nominations: ‘Peter Hujar’s Day,’ ‘Lurker,’ ‘Train Dreams’ Lead

The nominations for the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards have been announced and Ira Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day was at the top of the list with five nominations: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Performance for Ben Whishaw, Best Supporting Performance for Rebecca Hall and Best Cinematography. Whishaw also earned a television nomination for the limited series Black Doves.
A host of films nabbed four nods each, including Lurker, Blue Sun Palace, Train Dreams, One of Them Days and Sorry, Baby.
The Best Feature nominees are Peter Hujar’s Day, The Plague, Sorry, Baby, Train Dreams and Twinless. In the last 30 years, at least one Spirit Awards Best Feature nominee has earned at least one Oscar nomination in its competing year.
This year’s Best Director nominees joining Sachs are Clint Bentley for Train Dreams, Mary Bronstein for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lloyd Lee Choi for Lucky Lu and Eva Victor for Sorry, Baby.
The Robert Altman Award, which goes to a film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast, is being awarded to The Long Walk — director Francis Lawrence, casting director Rich Delia, ensemble cast Judy Greer, Mark Hamill, Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Garrett Wareing
The Spirit Awards eligibility in the main categories are limited to American, or primarily American, productions but for International Film we have All That’s Left of You, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, A Poet, The Secret Agent and Sirāt. Curiously missing were Sentimental Value, No Other Choice and Jafar Panahi’s Gotham and New York critics winner It Was Just an Accident.
“The distinguished and inspired work produced by our nominated artists this year shows both the incredible breadth and the essential nature of independent art being created today,” said Brenda Robinson, Acting President of Film Independent. “These artists brilliantly demonstrate that there is no limit to the places where storytellers are able to find drama, humor and beauty, all while challenging audiences to stay engaged and curious, to protect the space where independent art can thrive.”
No nominations list would be without some eyebrow-raising snubs and today certainly brought those. Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke and Andrew Scott, found no love today. Neither did Kelly Reichardt, a staple at the Spirits, for her 70s era heist movie The Mastermind starring Josh O’Connor.
In television, Emmy winners made a splash with Adolescence showing up in four categories and The Pitt in two.
Best New Scripted Series nominees include Adolescence; Common Side Effects; Forever; Mr Loverman and North of North. In the Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series category, the nominees are Citizen Nation; Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time; Pee-wee as Himself; Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television and Vow of Silence: The Assassination of Annie Mae.
To be eligible for the Spirit Awards, films must have been produced for less than $30 million, while a budget of $1 million or less marks the features competing for the John Cassavetes Award. In the TV categories, only new shows that have run for one season and were released between October 1, 2024 and September 30, 2025, are eligible for consideration. An anthology series only qualifies in its first season.
This year, the Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from 18 different countries with budget ranging between $35,000 and $20 million. The following guidelines are applied in determining nominees: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means and diversity and inclusion. Of the overall 2026 nominees, 41% are women and 33% are BIPOC.
The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees are comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, critics, casting directors, film festival programmers and other working film professionals. This year, the Spirit Awards nominating committees are 45% female, 7% Nonbinary, 4% Transgender and 50% BIPOC; 31% identify as LGBTQ+ and 18% identify as people with disabilities (PWD).
Film Independent Spirit Awards are supported by Premier Sponsor Lavazza Coffee, Principal Sponsor IMDbPro and Official Sponsor FIJI Water. Easterseals Disability Services is the accessibility partner. The London West Hollywood and W Hollywood are the Official Hotels. Getty Images is the Official Photographer. Vision Media is the exclusive screening partner.
Spirit Awards winners are voted on exclusively by Film Independent members. The 41st annual Film Independent Spirit Awards will move from its famous Santa Monica beach tent location and now take place at the Hollywood Palladium on February 15, 2026.
