57th NAACP Image Awards: ‘Sinners’ Dominates, Michael B. Jordan Named Entertainer of the Year

On the final night of the 57th NAACP Image Awards, Sinners continued its domination from the previous nights, winning Outstanding Motion Picture while star Michael B. Jordan won Actor in a Motion Picture and Entertainer of the Year.
Jordan dedicated his lead actor award to his Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman, who died at the age of 43 in 2020.
“I was thinking about lead actor, and I was thinking about what lead actor meant to me. And honestly, I gotta dedicate this award to Chadwick Boseman,” Jordan said on stage. “As my brother, our time on this planet is short. I was watching the ‘In Memoriam’ and seeing how fast these careers go by and people’s lives go by, and what we do while we’re here on Earth. And I just want to be here and be present with you guys as much as possible.”
Miles Caton was the third Sinners win of the night, bringing its total to 12, with Breakthrough Performer in a Motion Picture while Cynthia Erivo was named Actress in a Motion Picture for Wicked: For Good.
While presenting the first award of the ceremony, One Battle After Another star Regina Hall mentioned Jordan and Delroy Lindo, asking the crowd to “take a moment for the two kings in the audience,” referencing last week’s incident at the BAFTA Awards.
Lindo himself commented on the response since the fallout.
“Before we start, I’d just like to officially say, we appreciate — I appreciate — we appreciate all the support and the love that we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend. It means a lot to us. It is an honor to be here amongst our people this evening. Among so many people who have shown us such incredible support. And it’s a classic case of something that could be very negative becoming very positive.”
In television, Quinta Brunson, Angela Bassett and Sterling K. Brown won the lead performance awards.
Among the night’s tributes were Viola Davis (Chairman’s Award) and Colman Domingo (President’s Award), with Salt-N-Pepa and DJ Spinderella being inducted into the awards show’s Hall of Fame.
In her acceptance speech, Davis said: “I like this quote that the definition of hell is, ‘On your last day on Earth, the person you became meets the person that you could have become.’ I say that about our nation, I say that about myself — that there is no becoming until you face the depth and the darkness of your own soul. There is no becoming without healing and without a radical acceptance of one’s truth.”
