6th Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) Film Awards nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere All At One,’ ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ lead
The Hollywood Critics Association have announced the nominees for their 2023 Film Awards, where A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once, written and directed by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, led the way with a total of nine nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and dual Best Supporting Actress nominations for Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis. Searchlight Pictures’ The Banshees of Inisherin received seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Colin Farrell, Best Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon, and Best Director for Martin McDonagh.
2022 HCA Film Awards Newcomer honoree and Belfast star Jude Hill, Till star Jalyn Hall, and The Black Phone star Madeleine McGraw announced the nominations for the 2023 HCA Film Awards on the HCA YouTube channel.
Focus Features’ TÁR, Sony/Tri-Star Pictures’ The Woman King, and UA Releasing’s Woman Talking earned five 2023 HCA Film Awards nominations with each film being nominated for Best Picture. Variance Films’ RRR and Universal Pictures’ The Fabelmans received four 2023 HCA Film Awards nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. Other films nominated for top HCA Film Awards include Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick, 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way of Water, Warner Brothers’ Elvis, A24’s Aftersun and Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
The Best Director lineup of 10 are: James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water, Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Park Chan-wook for Decision to Leave, Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, S.S. Rajamouli for RRR, Todd Field for TÁR, Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King and Sarah Polley for Women Talking.
Best Actor nominees were Austin Butler – Elvis, Tom Cruise – Top Gun: Maverick, Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin and Paul Mescal – Aftersun. Best Actress was comprised of nominees Cate Blanchett – TÁR, Viola Davis – The Woman King, Danielle Deadwyler – Till, Michelle Williams – The Fabelmans and Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Last week, the HCA revealed their 2023 Creative Arts Awards nominations (see below), where Everything Everywhere All At Once also led, along with Top Gun: Maverick. Also revealed last week, the Hollywood Critics Association announced three of their 2023 HCA Film Awards honorary award recipients: Angela Bassett will receive the HCA Acting Achievement Award, Rian Johnson will receive the HCA Filmmaking Achievement Award, and the Cast/Crew of RRR is receiving the HCA Spotlight Award.
Overall, Everything Everywhere All At Once is the total nomination leader with 16 nominations from the creative arts and main film awards categories, followed by Top Gun: Maverick with 10. The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, RRR and The Woman King were next with 8 apiece and Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Women Talking earned seven nominations each. The 2023 HCA Creative Arts ceremony will be held on February 17, 2023 and the 6th annual Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards will be one week later, on February 24, 2023 at the historic Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles, CA and live-streamed on the official HCA YouTube channel and HCA App. The ceremony will be produced by DIGA Studios and Content.23 Media.
Comedian, Actor, Writer Tig Notaro will host the 2023 HCA Film Awards ceremony. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time, Tig can currently be seen in Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+ and next year on AppleTV+’s The Morning Show. Last year, Tig starred in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, and prior to that was seen in the heartwarming Paramount film, Instant Family. Tig also previously wrote, produced and starred in the semi-autobiographical Amazon series, One Mississippi, for which she also directed an episode. Tig’s most recent and fully animated standup special, Drawn, was nominated for a Hollywood Critics Association Award earlier this year. Tig and her wife, Stephanie Allynne, co-directed the feature film, AM I OK?, starring Dakota Johnson and Sinoya Mizuno, which premiered at Sundance this year and will be available on HBO Max in 2023.
