The 72nd Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing and foley artistry in film, television and gaming, were announced tonight with Dune: Part Two, Wicked, Shōgun and Ripley topping the winners list at the annual gala at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

Dune: Part Two won the award for feature effects and foley while Wicked won music editing. Emilia Pérez won the group’s international honor for features and The Wild Robot won for animation. Last night, A Complete Unknown triumphed with the Cinema Audio Society, winning the top award for sound mixing but lost both of its nominations at MPSE. All five are Oscar-nominated in the single sound category. Dune: Part Two also won the BAFTA and the Association of Motion Picture Sound award. Saturday Night won the sound editing award for feature dialogue and ADR. Deadpool & Wolverine was the nomination leader but lost all three of its bids.

In television, the wealth was equally spread out with Shōgun, Ripley, Only Murders in the Building and The Penguin sharing wins with no series taking home more than one award.

Two honorary awards were also presented: Kevin Costner received the Filmmaker Award and supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath, MPSE received the Career Achievement Award. Patton Oswalt served as the evening’s host, marking the third time he’s hosted the Golden Reel Awards. MPSE president David Barber presided over the festivities as the sound community came together to celebrate their own. The MPSE invited firefighters to attend the gala as special guests with the audience honoring them for their heroic efforts during the recent LA wildfires.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Critics Choice Association (CCA), San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle (SFBAFCC) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
