75th Writers Guild of America (WGA) awards: ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once,’ ‘Women Talking,’ ‘Severance’ take top wins
Everything Everywhere All At Once and Women Talking took home the original and adapted screenplay awards from the 75th Writers Guild of America (WGA) awards tonight, with Hacks, The Bear and Severance earning wins in television, at concurrent ceremonies taking place in Los Angeles and New York.
Three of the five Oscar nominees for original screenplay crossed over to WGA: Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Fabelmans and TÁR. The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness were not eligible here (very strict rules at the WGA for affiliation and script submission) and here we have The Menu and Nope.
In adapted screenplay, the Oscar crossovers joining Women Talking were Glass Onion and Top Gun: Maverick with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She Said earning WGA spots over ineligible Oscar nominees All Quiet on the Western Front and Living.
Feature films eligible for a Writers Guild Award must be exhibited theatrically for at least one week in Los Angeles during the eligibility period of January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022 and were written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of the Writers Guild of Canada, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, Writers Guild of Ireland, Writers’ Guild of South Africa, New Zealand Writers Guild, Film Writers’ Association (India), La Guilde Francaise des Scénaristes (France), Scriptwriters Guild of Israel, Société des Auteurs de Radio, Télévision et Cinéma (Québec), or Verband Deutscher Drehbuchautoren (VDD/Germany), collectively known as affiliate Guilds. Theatrical screenplays produced under the jurisdiction of the WGA or an affiliate Guild must have been submitted for Writers Guild Awards consideration.
In television, Severance was a double winner with awards for New Series and Drama Series, while The Bear won the award for Comedy Series. In the episodic categories, Better Call Saul won drama for “Plan and Execution” written by Thomas Schnauz and Hacks won comedy for “The One, The Only.” written by by Lucia Aniello & Paul W. Downs & Jen Statsky. The White Lotus, with all episodes written by Mike White, won Limited Series.
Several honorary awards were handed out at the dual coastal events. In Los Angeles, She Said writer Rebecca Lenkiewick received the Paul Selvin Award; Charlie Kaufman was honored with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement; and creator-showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single) was presented with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement. In New York, Spike Lee was awarded the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement by John Turturro; Paul Simms (What We Do in the Shadows, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, NewsRadio) was presented with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence by Donald Glover; and Penelope Koechl was honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award for Dedicated Service to the Guild by previous honoree and WGAE vice president for film/TV/streaming Lisa Takeuchi Cullen.
