77th Primetime Emmy Awards: ‘The Pitt,’ ‘The Studio,’ ‘Adolescence’ Take Top Wins

Freshman shows made a big splash at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards where HBO Max’s The Pitt and AppleTV+’s The Studio took the top wins for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively.
The Pitt, created by ER’s John Wells and Noah Wyle, won five awards overall, including three for acting: Wyle as Lead Actor, Katherine LaNasa for Supporting Actress and Shawn Hatosy for Guest Actor. It’s the first show to win the Emmy for Best Drama Series without a directing or writing win since the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones in 2019. In a pair of surprise, drama directing went to Slow Horses while drama writing went to the now canceled Andor.
The Studio was the big success story, breaking Emmy records with its 13 wins, the most for any comedy series in Emmy history. Creator Seth Rogen won four himself, for Series, Directing, Writing and Lead Actor with the show’s overall haul including Casting, Guest Actor (Bryan Cranston), Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing, Production Design, Music Supervision and Costumes. Rogen also tied the record for most Emmys won by a single individual in one night, joining Moira Demos (2016), Amy Sherman-Palladino (2018) and Dan Levy (2020).
The Penguin added one win tonight, Cristin Milioti for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, to its eight wins last week, including Costumes, Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
Adolescence breakout star Owen Cooper, 15, became the youngest male actor ever to win a Primetime Emmy Award, taking home the trophy for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The single take Netflix series also took home the wins for Limited Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor for Stephen Graham and Supporting Actress for Erin Doherty. As producer and writer, Graham earned three wins himself tonight.
Severance led the nominations for all shows with 27 but came away with just two tonight, but big ones. Britt Lower won Lead Actress in a Drama Series while Tramell Tillman became the first Black actor to win the Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Merritt Wever won Guest Actress at last week’s Creative Arts Awards.
While Jean Hacks went 4/4 in her Lead Actress in a Comedy Series bids for Hacks, Hannah Einbinder finally clinched the win for Supporting Actress for her work on the series. While at first giving a clever smirk to the camera and in her speech, earnesty took over and her heartfelt thanks extended to the show’s creators and revealed earlier on the red carpet that next season would be the show’s last. Einbinder closed her speech exclaiming, “Go Birds, Fuck ICE and Free Palestine!”
In two of the most excited audience moments of the night, Stephen Colbert revealed the first winner of the night (even before the host monologue, one of many odd choices tonight) and then near the end of the evening with the win for Late Night with Stephen Colbert for Outstanding Talk Series, the first win for the show, with the crowd chanting “Stephen!” as the team took the stage. Earlier this summer, Paramount and CBS announced that the series would end next year due to “costs,” which happened to coincide with the network settling a lawsuit with President Trump for $16M and to ensure their takeover by Larry Ellison’s Skydance, which the president could have halted.
Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen are set to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. This marks the first time the award will be presented to a couple, who earned the honor for their commitment to environmental activism, as well as their collaborations with organizations like Artists for a Free South Africa, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Heifer International, and No Kid Hungry.
Nate Bargatze hosted this years Emmys, and in one of the worst running gags in Emmy history, introduced a gag in which he would deduct money from a $100,000 donation to the Boys and Girls Club for every second a winner’s speech ran long. At several points in the show, the gag ran longer than most speeches and dropped to -$50,000 at one point. Ultimately, Bargatze, who remarked ‘Well, I won’t be doing this again” along with CBS pledged $350,000 to the organization at the show’s end.
