79th BAFTA Film Awards Nominations: ‘One Battle After Another’ Leads with ‘Sinners’ Close

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leads the nominations for the 79th BAFTA film Awards 14, just two shy of the record set by Gandhi and on par with previous leaders like All Quiet on the Western Front, Atonement, The King’s Speech and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Along with nominations for Best Film, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Anderson, Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor and Leading Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio (more on him in a bit), Rising Star nominee Chase Infiniti is nominated for Leading Actress. Infiniti, who was nominated for Critics Choice, the Golden Globe and SAG Actor Award, was snubbed earlier this week by the Oscars, missing a nomination there.
This is DiCaprio’s seventh lead nomination—after The Aviator, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant (which he won on his way to his first Oscar win), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Don’t Look Up—putting him alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Jack Lemmon, Peter Finch and Dustin Hoffman. At 51, DiCaprio is now the youngest to hit that number, besting Hoffman by one year. Meryl Streep holds the overall record (as she often does) with 12 Best Actress nominations. Across all performance categories, however, Streep and Judi Dench tie with 15 each. At six, Dench is the undisputed queen of wins.
Ryan Coogler’s horror hit Sinners was very close with 13 nominations, the highest for any film by a Black director in BAFTA history, and coming just five days after the film set the all-time Oscar record for most nominations for a single film in Academy history with 16. The film grabbed acting nominations for Michael B. Jordan in Leading Actor and Supporting Actress for Manchester-born Wunmi Mosaku but not a Supporting Actor nod for Delroy Lindo, who stands as the only Oscar nominee this season without a single precursor nomination under his belt.
Next, Hamnet and Marty Supreme both earned 11 nominations, with Timotheé Chalamet returning to BAFTA’s leading actor race for a second year in a row after A Complete Unknown, and Mescal rebounding from his Oscar snub last week. Chloe Zhao’s Shakespeare saga sets the the record for the highest number of BAFTA nominations from a female director.
As is almost every year, BAFTA saves several nominations for its local and more indie fare, not just Oscar frontrunners. I Swear, Pillion and The Ballad of Wallis Island. All found their way into the Outstanding British Film category while I Swear’s Robert Aramayo (also a Rising Star nominee), is nominated for Leading Actor while Carey Mulligan made the cut for Supporting Actress for The Ballad of Wallis Island. All three films made it into the screenplay categories.
As for the snubs, and there always are, Frankenstein missed Best Film while still landing eight nominations, Wicked: For Good scored two nods, for costume and makeup & hair, faring better than its complete shutout at the Oscars. But the biggest miss of the day has to be Amy Madigan for Weapons. After Golden Globe and SAG Actor nominations and winning Critics Choice, missing here in a field of six isn’t a small deal for the veteran actress in the Oscar race.
The 79th BAFTA Film Awards take place on February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with Alan Cumming on hosting duties. Here is the complete list of nominations.
