Gerran Howell on Whitaker’s Growth in Season Two of ‘The Pitt,’ Dr. Robby’s Intentions, and His Go-To Karaoke Song [VIDEO INTERVIEW]
In season one of the Emmy-winning medical series The Pitt, Whitaker was a breakout character and, among the large ensemble of veteran actors and newcomers, it made Gerran Howell a breakout star.
At 35, the baby-faced Howell is no newcomer though, he’s been actively working in the film and television industry since he was “teeny tiny,” as he says. Before The Pitt, the Welsh actor was probably most known for the vampire show Young Dracula, where he played Vlad, and ran from 2006-2014. Roles in shows like sci-fi teen series The Sparticle Mystery and Emerald City, a modern-day telling of The Wizard of Oz, got him small roles in the Hulu limited series Catch-22 and in Sam Mendes’ Oscar-winning film, 1917. More recently, he co-starred in the British crime series and rural drama Out There, which helped put him on the map for The Pitt.
10 months have passed since the events of PittFest and Whitaker, who began the series as a fourth-year resident, is now a full-fledged doctor. Although, you wouldn’t know it by the type of razzing he gets from (now) second-year resident Santos (Isa Briones), whose “Huckleberry” nickname for him is still stuck. But now, instead of being the target of a variety of bodily fluids as he was in season one, Whitaker is partially in charge of two new recruits at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center: fourth-year med student James Ogilvie and Joy Kwon, a third-year medical student.
In my conversation with Howell, recorded the day after the season two finale (which he hadn’t seen at the time), we talk about the SAG ensemble win for the show’s cast, his early acting gigs, including how he got his SAG card, working with Ernest Harden Jr., who played Louie, how Whitaker once again is a shoulder to cry on–this time for Ogilvie after Dr. Robby last season–and how he views the relationship between himself and single mom Amy. Plus, what he thinks of Dr. Robby seemingly trying to separate the two and what he thinks Whitaker will be up during the four months house-sitting for Robby. Oh, and after the post-credits sequence from the season finale, he also tells me what his go-to karaoke song is.
Gerran Howell is Emmy-eligible in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The Pitt.
