Brittany Allen On Bringing Honor to Roxie’s Final Hours on ‘The Pitt’ [VIDEO INTERVIEW]
There is no question The Pitt is one of the biggest shows on TV right now. Last year’s Emmy winner for Drama Series continued to build an audience in its second season, even increasing their viewership by 50% over season one. And with just about everyone watching, a guest role at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s Emergency Department is one of the most coveted opportunities for any actor.
When Brittany Allen got the call that she had landed a multi-episode arc on season two, she knew she had the chance to do something special. Having appeared in a number of TV series over the years, including All My Children, Schitt’s Creek, The Boys, and Dexter: Original Sin, her years of work had prepared her for the unique role.
On The Pitt, Allen guest stars as Roxie Hamler, a woman with advanced cancer who is brought to the hospital after suffering seizures and injuring her leg in a fall. Under the care of Drs. McKay (Fiona Dourif) and Javadi (Shabana Azeez), Roxie knows she is almost at the end and, despite the pleas from her husband Paul (Taylor Handley) and their two sons, she refuses to go home, wanting to protect her family’s final memories of her.
Set in a busy urban emergency department, there are plenty of doctors, nurses, patients, and relatives floating in and out any given episode. A boy is injured when a firework explodes in his hand. A father has chest pains and is admitted to the ICU after a heart attack. Pregnant people in labor, minor lacerations, car accidents, any number of big and small medical needs bring people to the hospital. But through Roxie, Allen gets to welcome viewers into the quiet, heartbreaking final hours of a woman who has given everything to her family and whose fight is over. In our conversation, she speaks about the preparation for this unique role, and what it was like to walk onto the energetic set.
Brittany Allen is Emmy-eligible in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for The Pitt.
